The morning came
and we waited for the ferry to arrive with the vet and warriors. I stayed with
Sac and just waited. Susan the Vet came into the house and greeted us. She was
immediately so sweet to Sac giving her little treats, which Sac gladly scarfed. So we spent about an hour talking with the
vet as she thoroughly examined Sac and watched her try to walk inside and out
of the house. We discussed every option and the weight of our decision was head
splitting. Again we watched Sac outside and on the vet’s suggestion used a
towel around her midsection to help her walk more easily. Sac sat in the grass
and rolled and then sat up looking about with bright eyes. Everything was fine
except her back end – it was more her hips than the right leg. We discussed
options again and then went with our gut feeling that since she was so alert
and full of life that we would take a chance and try some different medications
that were discussed and up some medication and make some changes to the house –
rubber backed rugs so she would not slip, a padded area where she could sleep
and use the towel to help her walk. This would not cure a 16 year old dog but
maybe get her more mobile and in less pain so she could continue a decent
quality of life for a bit longer. We were here at the lighthouse with her 24
hours a day where we could really monitor and care for her constantly. A relief to us – knowing this may not work
but a sense of relief that we will give her every chance we can. We had dogs
before when we absolutely knew it was time to let them go and we heart
wrenchingly did, but did not have that feeling with Sac.
There were only two
gentlemen who came to work today as warriors and they said they could care for
Sac if I wanted to go into town with Fred. They had been through the care of
elderly dogs and knew what to do. The vet
said that would be fine. So the three of us went down to the cove to catch the
ferry where Ethan and Zion were so patiently waiting for us. They were relieved
that Sac was still with us.

We made the journey
back to the dock in the brilliant sunny morning chatting with the vet and Ethan
admiring the scenery as usual along the way.
I paid the vet for
her uncommon house call and gave her a pretty Seguin T-shirt to thank her for
her caring visit. Fred met me at the car after walking down from the dock and
first stopped to see Cyndy and tell her what we had decided. We also took one
of the lawn mowers from the island that was broken. Fred got a stranger’s help and put the lawn
mower in Cyndy’s trunk. People are so
nice around here. She will take it the
shop for estimate and repairs (or maybe she will buy a new one). Cyndy was working at Spinney’s restaurant
very close by and was relieved that her niece was still with us.
Off we went to town
to take care of business at the office and see Catherine. Next was a trip to
Big Lots to get cheap rubber backed carpets and a few other stores for stuff.
We needed to go to LL Bean to return Fred’s too big rain pants so we went down
there which wasn’t far. We opted not to do laundry this time, which saved us at
least an hour of time.
We were very homesick
for Mexican food which we had not had since we had left home. Fred located one
named Pancho Villa in Brunswick, which had good reviews on Yelp and there we
went for a nice lunch and we were starving. After lunch we headed back to Bath for grocery
shopping and hardware store. We got word that Dick – Fred’s brother was on his
way to meet us at the dock. He is going to stay with us as our first guest for
a few days. It will be fun to show him “our” island and the magnificent light.
At around 3:45 pm we picked up some ice cream at Percy’s store just down from
the dock and met Dick at the dock. Ethan
showed up very soon after and we loaded up and headed for home. The tide was
high and we had to use the dinghy to get to shore. For the first run I was in
the front of the dinghy sitting/lying on stuff and holding more stuff. Fred did
an excellent job of rowing us in and we popped out on to the rocks in knee,
deep water. I held the dinghy, while Fred unloaded stuff and then went back on
to get more stuff and Dick. The two worker guys said they had Sac outside with
them for a few hours and that she did fine – we were relieved to hear that.

It was fun to see
Dick so excited and interested in our island home and took him for a tour of
the lighthouse at his request after we unloaded and unpacked everything. Fred and Dick took a hike down South trail
while I tried to recover from my stress full day and week and to be with Sac. I
put out the new carpets for Sac and her new orthotic doggie bed. We had
Hawaiian chicken with salad for dinner and watched the news with knitting and
off to bed – finally!
